Resins/Films Methacrylate Derivatives

PARAPET™ (methacrylic resin molding material)

General name
PMMA, polymethyl methacrylate, acrylic resin
Sales format
Powder, pellets

PARAPET™ is a material made of methacrylic resin, which is sometimes called the “queen of plastics” in Japan. Methacrylic resin was first manufactured in Western countries in the 1940s. Kuraray started development in 1971, and has been producing it at its own plant since 1973.

Because of its characteristics, which include high transparency, weatherability, surface gloss and scratch resistance, methacrylic resin is used in automotive parts (tail light covers, door visors, meter covers) and in various other applications, such as optical components, light electrical appliances and sundries. In recent years, demand has grown rapidly in the field of optical components, particularly in light guide plates for LCD backlights. Kuraray was among the first to supply high-quality materials to the light guide plate market by drawing on the optical technologies (materials and processing technologies) it cultivated in sales of laser disc products and materials, and has proposed superior processing methods.

PARAPET™ SA is a soft methacrylic resin (soft acrylic resin) created from Kuraray’s polymer technology. It has attracted attention as a non-PVC material that offers superior safety and eliminates concerns about bleed-out because it does not use plasticizers. Since the base is an acrylic resin, it has the transparency and weatherability of acrylics. It also features good compatibility with other polar polymers and exhibits high moldability.

PARAPET™ GR-F is a brand Kuraray developed as a raw material for acrylic film. As it has the excellent weatherability of acrylic resins, it is used as protective film in building materials, particularly exterior walls and window frames, and in reflective film on road signs.

Standard grades and properties

■ Standard grades

Different grades offer a variety of properties. Grades can be selected depending on molding method and product requirements.

Product type Characteristics Main applications
G General-purpose Standard grade offering balanced properties in formability, mold release characteristics, heat resistance and mechanical properties General sundries, name plates, lighting covers, stationery items, industrial parts, etc.
GF High fluidity Offers high fluidity, making it suitable for application to thin or large molded products
EH Extrusion Suitable for use in extrusion molding, with solvent resistance and mechanical strength
HR-L Heat resistance Of all standard grades, this offers greatest resistance to heat, with good mechanical strength, solvent resistance, etc. Automobile tail lamps, automobile meter covers, various name plates, lighting covers, lighting lenses, extruded sheets
HR-G Heat/Solvent resistance Offers enhanced solvent resistance in addition to heat resistance
HR-F Heat resistance/High fluidity Offers good fluidity despite heat resistant properties

■ Optical grades

Greater transparency. Specialized for optical applications.

Product type Characteristics Main applications
GH-S Has good optical properties, fluidity and transferability, making it suitable for use in light guides Light guides, various optical lenses
GH-K Has the greatest fluidity of all the optical grades, making it suitable for use in the light guides of thin or large molded products
HR-S Has enhanced heat resistance in addition to good optical properties

■ Impact resistant grades

The PARAPET™ GR Series has good impact resistance, in addition to the optical properties and heat resistance of methacrylic resins.

It also has good chemical resistance, making it useful in preventing the appearance of cracks during printing and coating.
Types available to meet heat resistance, fluidity and other requirements.
Note: Refer to the list of physical properties for product names and lineup.

■ Special grades

Specialized grades that prevent static charges and wavelength selectivity of light

Product type Characteristics Main applications
SF-L Static charge prevention Prevents static charges, while retaining the useful properties of methacrylic resins Stationery and various name plates
Filter grades Transmits near infrared light Grades for sharp cut filters, made of methacrylic resins with specific wavelength properties
Note: Refer to the PARAPET™ filter grades page for more details.
Infrared receivers for remote controllers, etc.
Absorbs UV light Flash covers for cameras, sunglasses
GR-F Stress whitening resistance Has good stress whitening resistance and hot water whitening resistance. Films and modifiers
