Kuraray Trading Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka; President: Mitsunobu Makino) has developed the KTY series of membrane cleaning agents to remove scale (waste and rust) from membranes in membrane filtration water-treatment systems, which are used in fields as diverse as semiconductors and food processing. The KTY series will be available from October 20, 2004. Kuraray Trading has been engaged in the manufacturing and sales of various membranes, and this is the first membrane cleaning agent it has developed to prevent the buildup of membrane scale.

Because of their cost advantage, energy conservation, and performance, membrane filtration systems are used for water treatment in a broad range of industries, including semiconductors, electronics parts, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. In recent years, membrane filtration systems have also been used for purification of potable water, treatment of wastewater, and treatment of effluent seepage at waste incinerator facilities. It is anticipated that there will be an increasing need for the development and use of high-performance membranes as concern for environmental issues rises. Together with this, the need for cleaning agents that will allow membranes to function at peak performance will rise.

The membrane cleaning agent

Because the particle size of substances to be filtered differs, there are a number of different membrane types. These include melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, and RO membranes. Fouling degrades the performance of these membranes, and the membranes themselves can become physically or chemically degraded. The KTY series of membrane cleaning agents removes the microscopic particles, microorganisms, dissolved polymers, and concentrations of substances that adhere to filter membranes, preventing the fouling and blocking of membrane pores with solid substances. Fouling reduces the membrane's filtration capacity, increasing running costs otherwise adversely affecting operations, making it necessary to clean or replace membranes periodically. The new KTY-110 through KTY-140 cleaning agents are suitable for cleaning melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, and RO membranes used in industrial systems, food processing, and swimming pools. The lineup includes an alkali cleaning agent, an acidic cleaning agent, an acidic compound cleaning agent, surface-active agent, disinfectant, and bleach.

Features of the KTY-110 through KTY-140 series

  • Meets a wide spectrum of membrane cleaning needs
  • Allows selection of the efficient cleaning agent best suited to any given fouling or scaling problem
  • Compliant with safety and environmental standards, including material safety data sheet (MSDS)
  • Contributes to lower running costs

Membrane scaling prevention agent

During water treatment, the cacrylonitrile styreneO4, CaCO3, Sionomer resin2, ferric salts Fe, and other substances that are formed in the wastewater pipes build up on membranes and cause scaling. This prevents a membrane from functioning properly. The rate of recovery and the membrane's lifespan decline. An efficient response is needed. The KTY-150 through KTY-152 series are chemical agents that prevent such scaling and dissolve existing scaling with a high degree of effectiveness. They can be used with industrial RO membranes as a scaling prevention agent, as a cooling water treatment agent, as a steam recovery water treatment agent, and in membrane filtration equipment used for food processing.

Features of the KTY-150 through KTY-152 series

  • Prevents membrane scaling
  • Compliant with safety and environmental standards, including material safety data sheet (MSDS)
  • Contributes to lower running costs
